Keeping Food Out of the Landfill: Policy Ideas for States and Localities
The Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic published this toolkit to provide comprehensive information on eight different policy areas that states and localities can consider as they ramp up efforts to reduce food waste. The toolkit includes recommendations for each of the policy areas, which can be utilized by legislators, advocates, food donors, and food recovery organizations to call for policy changes. Each section of the toolkit describes the relevant federal laws, provides state examples, and offers the Clinic’s policy recommendations.
The policy areas are:

• Date Labeling;
• Food Safety for Food Donations;
• Food Waste Reduction in K-12 Schools;

National Resource Websites
Is it OK to eat? This website features images of food items that might give some people pause (i.e. separated yogurt, a russeted apple, a really brown banana). Articles explain the science behind the items, in most cases concluding that they’re perfectly fine to eat. The goal is more peace of mind and less wasted food.

EPA Food Recovery Challenge (FRC)
As part of EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge, organizations pledge to improve their sustainable food management practices and report their results. The FRC is part of EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Program (SMM). SMM seeks to reduce the environmental impact of materials through their entire life cycle. This includes how they are extracted, manufactured, distributed, used, reused, recycled, and disposed.
